Looking for an opportunity to learn about publishing a magazine and webzine and to let your skills shine? The Edge Teams may be for you! We’re looking for youth (15-18 years old) to volunteer to be part of a provincial/territorial team to develop the next edition of the Edge magazine and contribute to the webzine. We have positions for would-be designers, rovers, seekers and writers. Interested?

 

Edge Team Position:  Designer

 

The Edge magazine is looking for a would-be designer between 15 and 18 years old.  With the help of the Art Director, you will help to design the Edge magazine and web site.

 

Term:

February 25, 2002 to September 30, 2002

 

Time Commitment:

On average 1 – 2 hours per week.  This varies week to week and depends on the stage of production.  The most you would contribute in one week is 5 hours.  Please note that you will be required to volunteer during the summer months.

 

Main Responsibilities:

-         Contribute ideas for the design of the magazine and web site.

-         Contribute appropriate photos, graphics and/or drawings to build the design of the magazine

-         Contribute photos and graphics to enhance pages of the web site

 

Abilities, knowledge and attitudes sought:

-         Artistic ability in photography, graphics or drawing

-         Communications skills

-         Ability to work on a Team

-         Ability to meet deadlines

 

Specific requirements:

-         Must have access to a computer with Internet access and be able to use MS Word and email.  Computer access may be personal or through a school or a community access site (see www.cap.ic.gc.ca).

 

If interested, you’ll need to submit:

- Cover letter and resume

-         2 design samples (photos, graphics, drawings)

-         Short paragraph on your future work/learning plans (25 – 50 words)

 

 

The fine print:

 

-         13 designer positions are available (1 positions per province and territory).  If recruited, you will receive an honorarium (valued at $300.00) at the completion of the term.  The honorarium is to be directed towards a learning program (i.e. bike maintenance course, guitar lessons, sports camp, computer workshop) of your choice.

-         You’ll be matched with and supported by a mentor who works in the graphic design field.

-         You can apply for more than one Edge Team position.  You must submit a separate application for each position.  Please indicate the position you are applying for on your cover letter.

For youth 15 – 18 years old who like to stand out in a crowd or who are would be public relations personnel.  With the aid of the Marketing Guru, you will develop promotional strategies to let youth and those in your community know about the Edge.

 

Term:

February 25, 2002 to September 30, 2002

 

Time Commitment:

On average 1 – 2 hours per week.  This varies week to week and depends on the stage of production.  The most you would contribute in one week is 5 hours.  Please note that you will be required to volunteer during the summer months.

 

Main Responsibilities:

-         Contribute ideas for the editorial outline and design of the magazine and web site.

-         Assist in promoting the Edge and career awareness to youth

-         Develop and deliver presentations on the Edge and career development

-         Work with your local communities to help bridge employers and youth

 

Abilities, knowledge and attitudes sought:

-         Presentation and communications skills

-         Ability to work on a Team

-         Willingness to contribute and develop ideas

-         Ability to meet deadlines

 

Specific requirements:

Must have access to a computer with Internet access and be able to use MS Word and email.  Computer access may be personal or through a school or a community access site (see www.cap.ic.gc.ca).

 

If interested, you’ll need to submit:

-         Cover letter and resume

-         Samples of speeches or presentations you’ve prepared/delivered

-         Short paragraph on your future work/learning plans (25 – 50 words)

 

The fine print:

-         13 seeker positions are available (1 position per province and territory).  If recruited, you will receive an honorarium (valued at $300.00) at the completion of the term.  The honorarium is to be directed towards a learning program (i.e. bike maintenance course, guitar lessons, sports camp, computer workshop) of your choice.

-         You’ll be matched with and supported by a mentor who works in the public relations field.

For youth 15 – 18 years old who like to go on fact finding missions.  With the aid of the Editor, you’ll scope out people to interview, scan books and the Internet for the latest facts and make sure that what goes into print is nothing but the truth.

 

Term:

February 25, 2002 to September 30, 2002

 

Time Commitment:

On average 1 – 2 hours per week.  This varies week to week and depends on the stage of production.  The most you would contribute in one week is 5 hours.  Please note that you will be required to volunteer during the summer months.

 

Main Responsibilities:

-         Contribute ideas for articles and design treatment for the magazine and web site

-         Research article ideas using Internet-based and hard copy resources

-         Contact people throughout Canada and conduct interviews to support specific articles

 

Abilities, knowledge and attitudes sought:

-         Good research skills

-         Good communication skills

-         Ability to work on a team

-         Willingness to contribute and develop ideas

-         Ability to meet deadlines

 

Specific requirements:

-         Must have access to a computer with Internet access and be able to use MS Word and email.  Computer access may be personal or through a school or a community access site (see www.cap.ic.gc.ca).
